WELCOME TO AMERICAN STANDARD DOG TRAINING
First of all, thank you for visiting our website to learn more about who we are and what we do here at American Standard Dog Training. Like many of you, I want to know I’m investing my time and money in the right place. Our mission at American Standard Dog Training is simply to provide the highest standard of dog training out there and to go above and beyond for our clients. As you’ll see below, our level of training and experience is untouched by most other civilian dog trainers out there. And that’s not just talk— it’s a promise backed by years of results.
MEET THE VISIONARY
My name is Garret Wing. I am the proud owner and founder of American Standard Dog Training. This company isn’t just a business - it’s the result of decades of living and working with police K9s. For nearly 30 years, my father served as a police K9 handler with a major metropolitan police agency in South Florida. He started his police K9 career in 1981, and by the time I was born in 1983, a fully trained police K9 was already a part of our family.
Instead of the usual family vacations, my family and I would travel to police K9 competitions and demonstrations across the state and country. My earliest memories are of watching my father and other police K9 handlers showcase the incredible discipline and skill of their K9 partners. I have watched thousands of dogs and handlers compete over the last few decades, and I still get excited about going to these events.
By 18, I’d already witnessed more K9 searches and apprehensions than most police officers see in their entire careers. Walking alongside K9 teams during searches wasn’t just a thrilling experience—it was a privilege usually reserved for K9 handlers, SWAT officers, or a select few elite officers. Yet there I was at 16, gaining an up-close education in what a highly trained police dog could do with their nose and bite. Even now, it still amazes me what highly trained police dogs are capable of when it comes to tracking down and apprehending a criminal.
In early 2002, I joined a renowned police K9 importer and vendor providing K9 security services—a career shift fueled by heightened security demands after September 11, 2001. As an EOD (Explosive Ordinance Detection) K9 Handler, I worked with highly trained dogs to sweep for explosives at the Port of Miami and Port Everglades, ensuring the safety of major cruise ships. All the other EOD handlers were either active or retired police K-9 handlers who worked their weekends at the port to make extra money. I was much younger and inexperienced than them, but I was a natural. My father took me under his wing and personally taught me the art of leash handling, working a dog in odor, rewarding with toys and praise, and managing high-drive dogs with precision. Those lessons laid the foundation for everything I do today.
SHAPING FUTURE HEROES
In those early years, I had the rare privilege of working with dogs destined for greatness. Many were titled Shutzhund or IPO dogs (German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, and Malinois) bought and shipped from overseas (Holland, France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, etc.). My job was to not only work them at the ports sniffing for bombs but to keep them sharp as they would all be eventually shown and sold to police departments looking for new dogs to add to their unit.
In just two years, I had the honor of working with dozens of these dogs. To put that into perspective, most police K9 handlers will only work with one or two dogs in their careers. Even the most experienced handlers might handle three or four dogs over decades. By age 20, I had personally worked with and handled dozens of dogs of different breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
PUSHING K9 BOUNDARIES
In 2004, at just 20 years old, I joined the same major metropolitan police department where my father had spent nearly 25 years serving with distinction. Having already experienced countless ride-a-longs and K9 searches, stepping into this role felt like a natural progression. Two years into my career, I jumped at the chance to become a police K9 handler.
Eventually, I was promoted to sergeant and found my way back to the K9 unit, this time as a supervisor. Those three years were the best of my career—training and working with police dogs never felt like a job. I thrived on pushing the boundaries of our department’s K9 training and traveled across the country to attend seminars, learning from the best in the industry to improve constantly.
While my passion for innovation drove the unit to new heights, it also led to conflict with my commander, and eventually, I was transferred out of the K-9 unit. It was the most devastating thing that ever happened to me in my life, but ultimately, it set me on the path to where I am today.
AMERICAN OVERWATCH
Because I could no longer train dogs at my regular job, I had to find another way to scratch that itch. After some serious soul-searching, I partnered with another K9 handler on Florida’s West Coast, and together, we founded American Overwatch K9 Services, LLC.
Our company motto is “Realistic Training for Real-World Deployments,” and our mission is simple: save lives on the street and battlefield by empowering law enforcement and military K9 handlers to perform at their absolute best. As co-owner and training director, I’ve been fortunate to travel nationwide, running seminars and helping handlers and supervisors hone their skills for better, safer deployments.
Naturally, when you run a successful police K9 training business, people come to you for help and advice with their pet dogs. That’s how the next chapter of my journey began— taking the principles of professional K9 training and adapting them to help everyday dog owners achieve incredible results.
TRAINING FOR EVERYONE - ASDT & DIYK9
For years, I turned people away, saying, “I only train police dogs and handlers.” Eventually, I realized something - I couldn’t find a trustworthy local trainer to whom I could refer my friends and coworkers for their pet dogs. That’s when I decided to take on my first “civilian” dog as a favor to a friend—and I was blown away.
The experience was a game-changer. Not only did I have tremendous success training that dog, but I found real joy in the process. I’d held onto the misconception that working with civilian dogs would harm my reputation as a Law Enforcement K9 Trainer. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
For every police dog, thousands of civilian dogs and owners need guidance. Once I opened my doors to the civilian world, there was no turning back. I’ve now been able to help countless families build stronger bonds with their dogs, overcome stubborn behavioral challenges, and find joy in their training journeys. And I’ve seen enough transformations to believe that every dog— and every owner— can make incredible progress.
